At Glance

The application of the novel media and digital technology will create new foundation and preparation for the culture heritage to spread and communication. With the interaction between internet, broadcast, TV program, relevant animation, film, amusement industries, it is of far-reaching significance for people to develop and conservate the culture heritage in digitalzation and marketizatin.

My role

This project is the curriculum project of user interface interaction design ,I was assigned the specific material of the appreciation of Dunhuang art seris and interation chanel - Brain Computer Interaction (BCI). I begin with the framing of primary interview questions, then I concluded and reviewed the material with desk study, designed the final low-fi interface and interaction systerm.

Goal

The insiders strongly recommended me not try to interpret the lessons in the Buddhist Sutras. Since it might cause misleading either for my misinterpretation or for misunderstanding by the visitors. After thorough discussion with the insiders and my supervisor, I decided to put emphasis on popularizing Buddhist culture in experimental interactive method( Brain Computer Interaction ).

Research The Background of Culture and Techniques

According to the research result, I found the interpretation of Buddhism is unnecessary for the insiders. Meanwhile, I may take the risk of misunderstanding, which would cuaser the misleading of the normal who don't know buddhism very well. So I hence focus on the Cave 3 of the Dunhuang groots, because it’s relatively entire conservation and excellent artistic achievement like line drawing, secularization of the religious figures, the weighting of content reveal and etc.

The Character of Content

The abundant various background stories of these simple vivd gestures. Eg. In the Cave3, the main topic are the thousand-armed and thousand- eyed Avalokkitesvara(TATEA). Being different from the earlier drawin and descripted TATEA which are traditional and religious. The TATEA in CAVE3, however, is more secularize and respond the era environment.

Brain Computer Interaction

Every significantly novel and advanced technology looks like magic in the first time. The discover of brian wave by Germany Scientist Hansberg in late 19th Century opened a new door for people to explore the mysteries right in our own bodies. According to the research, the nontrauma equipment can now detect 4 types of wave when brain saty in different activities. Depart from the δ wave and Θ wave which occurred when people are sleeping, we can get two signal from people when they are awake. The α, when people are relaxed; the β wave when people are nervous or highly focus on sth.

Challenges

The limited detected signal from non-intrusive Electroencephalography (EGG) helmet means the users will have less approaches to operate the screen and to interact with the abundant information behind the digital frescoes.


Design The Interaction Mechanism

The interaction technology can be divdided into two steps, clikc and launch. With the specifcation of Buddhism culture and the limitation of EGG helmet hardware, it is necessary to sepecrate these to actions into two simple step – navigating and activating.

Prospective Work

  • Optimize the Graphic User Interaction to involve more Buddhism figures in the screen.
  • Prepare and fabricate the one-one correspondent video or animation for different figures.
  • Fabricate the demo video through AE.
  • Prototype through Arduino.
